Okay, you’re ready to paint, you have done your homework and know what kind of paint you need for your room makeover but how do you know what color to choose? Well, this blog was so popular when I ran it last summer, I decided to give a repost here since it fits right in with what we are talking about. Have a fear with choosing the right paint colors for your space? If so, read on my friends…read on!
Nothing freshens up a room quicker, more dramatically, and more affordably than painting. It’s magic in a gallon can. But one thing prevents some people from enjoying the power of paint: fear of choosing colors. If you’re a victim of color paralysis, your days of living bland are about to end because by the time you finish this blog, you’ll be emboldened to be beige no more! You’ll soon have the confidence to bring color into your home and your life.
Selecting the right paint color can make your space feel cozy, expansive, relaxing, energizing, modern, nostalgic—you get the idea. If you can feel it, paint can create the mood to really live it.
5 Questions to Help You Choose Paint Colors:
1. HOW DO YOU PLAN TO USE THE SPACE?
Choose colors to match that activity. For instance, avoid bright red or yellow in a bedroom or a space used for reading, study or meditation.
2. HOW OFTEN DO YOU GROW BORED WITH YOUR DECOR:
If your answer is “often,” then stick to neutrals (tans, grays, taupe, muted greens, browns, and even some blues), which will allow you lots of flexibility to bring in color changes through your accessories and window treatments.
3. WHAT'S YOUR LIGHTING SITUATION?
If your space is already short on light, then stay away from dark color choices to prevent feeling like you are living in a cave.
4. WHAT COLOR IS YOUR FURNITURE?
Think balance. If you have dark furnishings, try lightening your walls. Lighter furniture? Be daring and try moving toward “the dark side” with your wall color. The key is experimentation: get an inexpensive sample can or jar of paint; paint a sizable test area, and live with it a few days to determine if you want to pay to get gallons mixed.
Sometimes you can return mixed paint for a refund and sometimes you can’t…know this info before you make a big purchase, just in case.
5. WHAT COLORS EXIST IN THE ADJOINING AREAS?
Choose colors that are pleasing with surrounding spaces so you achieve good flow throughout your home. Painting the colors on paper or cardboard can help you determine if the colors feel good together. It’s your home and only you can decide.
Answer these questions and you’re well on your way to a more colorful life, so go be fearless! And after you’re done painting, your brushes are rinsed and the paint has dried, stand back and soak up your new space. Remember the next time your room has a case of the blahs—the solution is just a paint can away!
Now, what will you do next to love where you live?
