Apparently...My Dogs Match My Décor
Sometimes it takes another person to point out a pattern that's been right in front of you all along.
The other day someone asked me one of the strangest decorating questions I've ever heard. “Did you intentionally choose dogs that match your décor?” My immediate response was, “Of course not!” I mean...who does that? Then I started thinking about it.
Uh oh.
Exhibit A
Meet Simon. If you've ever owned a Husky, you already know they don't simply lie on furniture. They become part of it.
Somehow, Simon has mastered the art of inserting himself between the back cushions and the sofa as though that was exactly how the couch was designed to be used. I honestly have no idea how a dog his size even fits back there, but apparently it's comfortable.
And yes...even when he's folded into the furniture like a furry throw blanket... He still matches the décor.
The Evidence Is Mounting...
Let's review the lineup. Dante, our previous German Shepherd, was solid black. Rosie, our little schnauzer, was gray and white. Today we have Maggie, another German Shepherd with her beautiful black and deep tan coat, and Simon, our Siberian Husky whose fur is a mix of cream, white, fawn, and black.
Now let's look around my house.
Warm neutrals.
Natural wood.
Cream.
Black accents.
Soft grays.
Well...
This is getting awkward. Apparently my decorating style has been quietly extending to the dog selection process, and nobody bothered to tell me.
It Gets Worse...
The funny part is that I honestly don't think it was intentional. I've always been drawn to warm, comfortable spaces that feel calm and welcoming. Maybe I've simply been choosing dogs that give me that same feeling without ever realizing it. Or maybe my subconscious has been making decorating decisions behind my back. I'm really hoping it's the first one.
Of course, there are practical reasons too. We've loved German Shepherds for years because they're incredibly loyal, ridiculously smart, and every one of ours has had a completely different personality.
Then Simon came along. German Shepherds tend to ask, “What would you like me to do?” Huskies say, “That's adorable...but I have a different plan.” Let’s just say, Simon keeps life interesting…very interesting!
Then It Hit Me...
The more I thought about it, the more I realized this story isn't really about my dogs. It's about those funny little patterns we create without even realizing it. Maybe it's the colors you're always drawn to. Maybe every coffee mug you own is blue. Maybe every sweater in your closet somehow ended up olive green. Maybe your throw pillows accidentally match your cat.
Or maybe...
Your dogs somehow blend perfectly into your decorating style. We don't usually plan these things. They simply become part of who we are.
Our homes quietly collect our preferences, our habits, and the things that make us feel comfortable. Sometimes someone else notices those patterns long before we do. And once they point them out... You can't unsee them.
The Verdict
So...
Do I choose my dogs to match my décor? I'd still like to believe the answer is...“No.” At least that's the story I'm sticking with. But... If our next dog happens to be some beautiful shade of greige, I'm going to have a serious conversation with my subconscious. Because apparently, she's been decorating behind my back all these years.
