THE MOST IMPORTANT RULE OF INTERIOR DESIGN

Take a moment to visualize delicate, sheer white drapes elegantly flowing down a large window that beautifully frames a sophisticated white chaise lounge and a contemporary glass side table. Ahhh, hours of reading and reflection await. Next visualize this tranquil scene interrupted by a toddler pulling a wagon full of his favorite toys, followed by a lovable but dirty, overly energetic puppy with a slobbery tennis ball in his mouth.

Clearly, the space described above does not adhere to the first and most important rule of design. Whether designing a large business complex, a whole house, or merely one room in your home, you must comply with the golden rule: Form Follows Function.

What does form follows function mean? The owner of the room described in the first paragraph above will learn the meaning the hard way as soon as the toddler rolls his toy truck up the white drapes or the puppy drops her drool-soaked tennis ball on the immaculate white chaise.

Good news! You can avoid a similar fate by honestly assessing all the actions and actors you might expect in your room. By thinking this through at the beginning of your project, you are setting yourself up for success. When you have the “what” and “who” figured out, always keep those answers in mind as you redesign your space.

Next time you’re in the furniture store eyeing the beautiful white area rug, or the gorgeous white, tufted sofa, have the good sense to avoid the question, “Do I dare?” Instead, listen to the little voice in your head that reminds you “form must follow function.” Avoid temptation and make choices based on “what and who,” and your redesign project will be one you are pleased with for years to come!

Now, what will you do next to love where you live?
