Preparing My Home for Special Guests

In a few days, my daughter and her husband will be arriving from Japan. To say I’m excited would be an understatement. The coffee is stocked, I’ve planned the meals, and I’ve fluffed the pillows. Twice. When family you haven’t seen for far too long comes to visit, every detail feels important.

But here’s the thing: preparing for guests shouldn’t mean a complete home makeover. It’s about making them feel welcome, comfortable, and cared for. Since many of us host out-of-town family or friends, I thought I’d share how I’m getting ready—and a few design touches I’m including to make it feel special.

Guest Preparation Tips

Step 1: Guest Room Details

The guest room is their little retreat, so I want it to feel calm and inviting. Fresh sheets, a couple layers of blankets (because what feels cozy in Osaka might feel chilly here), and good lighting for reading will set the right mood. I’m also setting out a small welcome basket with bottled water, some local snacks, and a handwritten note. It’s a simple gesture, but it says: “I’ve been waiting for you.”

Step 2: Thoughtful Touches from Home (and Abroad)

They’ve been living in Japan for years, so I’m sneaking in a few nostalgic comforts they can’t easily find there, like their favorite foods and a candle scent they love. Little details like this remind them that this is home, too. On the flip side, I’m also highlighting some of the Japanese keepsakes they’ve given me over the years. Styling meaningful accessories is a beautiful way to bring stories into a space—and it doubles as a conversation starter when they walk in and notice something familiar.

Step 3: Creating Cozy Common Spaces

The magic of visits isn’t just in the bedroom—it’s in the laughter that happens in the living room, or the hours spent around the dining table. I’ve moved a few chairs so conversation flows more easily and made sure the lighting is warm and layered (overhead, lamps, and a candle or two). A small tray with snacks and coasters in the living room means they don’t have to ask for anything—it’s right there when they need it.

Step 4: Anticipating Needs Before They Ask

There’s nothing worse than having to ask your host for a spare towel while dripping water across the hallway. I’ve stocked the guest bath with extra towels, travel-size toiletries, and even an extra phone charger. These small changes should help make the visit feel seamless.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, preparing for guests isn’t about creating a magazine-perfect home. It’s about love, comfort, and hospitality, making sure the people you care about know they belong. The pillows are fluffed, the sheets are fresh, and the snacks are waiting. But more importantly, the house feels ready for the joy of being together again.
