Five Popular Design Styles Defined

With each passing year, it seems more home interior “design styles” are added to an already long list. Will you be well served by, or even remember, the main design features of Urban Skandi Post-Modern Industrial Chic? I’m guessing not. So let’s bring it back to the basics. Read on for basic definitions and images of basic home interior styles. This foundation will help you determine which main styles you like and don’t like. Lighting Choices In Your Home

Only some homes are lucky enough to have natural lighting in abundance. And all homes have to rely on artificial light -- at least during nighttime hours. Okay, settle down, Alaska. We know, we know. The Tale of the $5 Hutch

I love thrifting! Especially when it leads to stories like the one I’m about to share – The Tale of the Five Dollar Hutch. Sometimes lady luck shines on you, and you find such a great piece at such a great price you can barely believe it. In the first stroke of luck, I was actually thrifting for a client seeking a hutch for her business to add extra storage. I decided to check the Habitat for Humanity Restore close to where I live, another lucky stroke, and it turned out better than imagined. They were having a liquidation sale that day to get rid of extra inventory. After finding the right hutch more my client, I saw this little beauty in the parking lot…

Choosing a Non-Traditional Neutral Color for Your Interior

Let’s consider the modest neutral color palette. Common neutral colors include tan, white, taupe, grey, beige and greige (the popular grey/beige combo). And contrary to the theory that low levels of saturation define a neutral, some would argue that deep charcoal or even black are neutrals despite their intense saturation. While you won’t find a neutral color on a color wheel, you will find color wheel colors used to create neutrals. And if you’ve seen my videos, you may have heard me speak of a “neutral blue or green.” So just what the heck is a neutral and why should you care about them?! Read on to find out more!

Interiors Are Going Green in 2024

Last week I shared my thoughts on trending colors for 2024. This week we’re jumping in to one of biggest overall trends in the world of design: sustainability. Since The Redesign Habit is all about “RE” concepts – repurposing, recycling, reusing, redesigning, and reimagining – the increased focus on sustainable interior design is a great fit that I wholeheartedly support! And the good news is there are now even more products and ideas to help us accomplish that goal. So let’s talk a little bit about what some of those options might be.

Five Things NOT to do When Choosing Paint Colors for Your Home

Today I’m flipping the script on choosing colors for your home. Instead of providing guidance on what to do, I’ll focus on what NOT to do. What will happen if you do the things I advise against? Well, I may show up at your door proclaiming to be commissioner of the color police to publicly shame you, although that’s rather unlikely. But not impossible. You've been warned. Of course, it’s your home and you should do what you want. My hope is these “negative” tips help you avoid some common pitfalls and achieve positive results. We’re both looking for the same solution – for you to love where you live!

Primary Bath Renovation

I’m sure our story isn’t all that different than a lot of yours. You know the one…the one where you’re able to afford a great house in a terrific neighborhood. With a catch. The house hasn’t been updated since it was built over 20 years ago. Well we’ve been catching up in our “new house” for six years now, and we have been slowly but surely worked our way through the very, very long list of needed updates. This year, 2023, was deemed the year of the bathroom. In our house, we are fortunate to have three bathrooms. One powder room and two full baths, including an en suite to the primary bedroom. Stay tuned for our primary bath reno for a journey that included some crazy twists and turns – and dubious sales tactics – but ultimately a great result.

Saving an Unsavable Piece of Furniture

This is a furniture makeover challenge I issued to myself. Let me set the stage…

My hubby and I recently redesigned my workshop in the garage. There was an old buffet piece I had been using as a workbench. Now, with the new workshop area, there was no longer a place for the buffet. Being a reuse and repurpose girl at heart, I couldn’t with good conscience throw out a piece of furniture (no matter how scary the current condition was) without trying to fix it up and pass on to someone who could use it. This is where the makeover story begins.

Garage Workshop Redesign Project

Many, many hours. That’s what I spend in my garage working on different projects. Some for fun and some for work, which, thankfully, is also fun. The projects range from furniture redesign and refinishing to crafting and decorating projects. When you do something for many, many hours, you’re smart if you make the space that you’re working in the best it can be. That definitely was not the case with my garage space – but that’s all changed now, baby! I got me a great workspace and I’m oh so happy! It’s nothing fancy, and people with a really nice, dedicated workshop may not be impressed. But for this redesign gal, it’s just right. Let me share how I got from workshop mess to workshop bliss…
