5 Tips to Improve Your Outdoor Living Space

Summer is officially here! Results may vary, depending on your location. Here in Southern California it finally feels like summer has arrived. We are lovin’ those epic rays! And warmer weather means more outdoor time, so read on to learn five tips to help you make your outdoor space even more enjoyable. No rocket science here, just a few simple ideas you may not have considered lately to make your outdoors become the “great” outdoors.

Elements of Outdoor Living

1. Fire: Adding a fire feature will allow you to extend the fun when the sun goes down and chill turns up. Fire means romance. And if romance is not part of your current situation, it means the next best thing (or some would argue the very best thing) old fashioned s’mores. With a little savvy shopping you’ll find fire pits and chimineas to fit nearly any budget.

2. Water: Create that oh-so-relaxing garden atmosphere by adding a water feature. Who doesn’t love the trickling of a fountain? Okay, so maybe less during those times when bladder control is more challenging, but that’s why there’s an off switch. Like fire pits, you can find many affordable options, plus DIY project is you’re so inclined. For even less money and effort you might consider a small table-top fountain to infuse a sense of peace and calm where you choose to chill.

3. Lighting: Adding just the right lighting to your patio or yard can create a magical feel. Not only will you set the mood for evening activities, but you can make playing cards and games hassle-free. Hanging lights, rope lights, tiki lights, candles, the options are abundant and the results can be extraordinary.

4. Shade: Before the sun goes down, creating shady space is crucial. Umbrellas and sails are the perfect vehicles to bring a rainbow of colors to your outdoor world. We have an 11-foot cantilever umbrella with lights that run on solar and have been thrilled with it. If your solution doesn’t come with its own lights, you can likely find a way to hang lighting from it to fit your needs. Do your homework on cost versus durability on the fabrics you choose. Some products make big claims they literally can’t back up when things heat up.

5. Fragrance: Summer is for senses. Let yours go wild by planting some beautiful plants and flowers that are a delight for the eyes, nose and soul. Jasmine, lavender, and honeysuckle come to mind. You’ll find affordable options, or if you’re feeling adventurous—and especially if you have kidlets—you might consider growing your blooming delights from seeds and tap into the wonder of the universe.
