5 Critical Beginner Tips for Interior Redesign
Redesign means making intentional changes to your space using what you already own—or with minimal new additions—to improve function and style without a full renovation.
Redesigning your home can feel exciting, overwhelming, and slightly dangerous (especially if you’ve recently fallen down a Pinterest rabbit hole). The good news is you don’t need a degree in interior design or a truckload of money to excel in transforming your home. You just need a little direction and a willingness to get your DIY on.
5 Tips for a Successful Interior Redesign
1. Start with One Room
Trying to redecorate your entire house at once is like trying to eat a pizza in one bite: it might sound amazing but it can’t be done unless your home, or the pizza, is very small. So pick the room that bugs you the most and/or has the most potential and focus your energy there. You’ll see progress faster, which builds confidence and motivation for the next space.
2. Define the Function First
Before you buy that gorgeous velvet bench, ask yourself: what do I actually need this room to do? What functions need to function there? A calm place to read? A space for entertaining? Maybe a multipurpose room that can handle Zoom calls and yoga poses? Once you account for all the functions needed, the form becomes a lot easier to figure out.
3. Shop Your House
One of the best beginner design moves? Use what you already have. Move that lamp from the bedroom into the living room. Switch out the artwork. Try that storage bench in the hallway. Rearranging your existing pieces costs nothing and often creates a totally fresh feel.
4. Choose a Color Palette
Nothing says “I’m still figuring this out” like a room with a head-scratching mix of colors. Take your time and create a cohesive color palette of 2–3 main colors. Any more than that can cross into the circus-feeling realm. Neutrals are safe and calming, but don’t be afraid to add a bold accent for personality. Once the main 2-3 are established, you can always tweak – for little expense – by swapping in complementary accent colors.
5. Edit, Edit, Edit
Design is as much about what you take out as what you put in. Once you’ve styled your space, take a step back and ask yourself what can go. Too many accessories can clutter a room visually. When in doubt, remove something.
